Information on how to apply as a Visiting PhD student
Visiting PhD students may be able to study with us for a maximum period of one calendar year. Prospective Visiting PhD students should contact their intended Imperial-based academic supervisor and to plan their research whilst at Imperial before applying.
Visiting PhD students must be registered on a PhD programme at their university to be eligible.
Visiting (occasional) students application process:
- Submit your application to the Mathematics Research (Occasional FT) program via My Imperial.
As part of your application you will be required to upload:

Letter of application (this can be either an email or a letter from your hosting supervisor confirming your invitation to Imperial).

Proposed study plan (a brief description of the project you will be working on is sufficient).

English language certificate (required for visits lasting 6 months or longer). More information can be found on the English language requirements page. If you are exempt or if your visit is shorter than 6 months, please upload a word document stating your exemption.
Standard tuition fees are charged unless waived by the department. Please consult with your host supervisor to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria for a fee waiver.

- Reply to your offer
Once you have received an offer of a place from the Registry, you must respond to it within 28 days via your My Imperial account, otherwise your offer may be withdrawn.
Visa information is included in the offer letter for students who require a visa to study in UK.

- Offer conditions
If your offer is conditional you must meet the conditions of your offer before your place is confirmed.
ATAS: most non-EEA nationals will require ATAS clearance for this programme. ATAS processing times can be long. Students who require ATAS should apply as soon as they receive an offer. Information about ATAS requirement and guidance how to complete an ATAS application can be found here.
- Complete online enrolment
All students are required to be enrolled on their course and must enrol online on My Imperial before the start of their programme.- To enrol online, Student Visa holders must provide a copy of their current passport and visa beforehand. The instructions on this are provided on My Imperial and by the Admissions team in their email communications sent to you.
- Students coming to UK under the Standard Visitor route (courses up to 6 months) must provide a copy of their passport and a copy of their boarding pass or travel ticket. To submit these documents please follow these instructions:
- In the "My Visa" tile, enter either "boarding pass" or "travel ticket" in the visa number field.
- Use the date of your entry into the UK as the start date and either the date of departure from the UK or six months after your arrival date as the end date.
- Finally, attach a copy of your boarding pass or travel ticket.
Only students who completed their online enrolment can be issued with an ID card upon arrival.
