Nelder Visiting Fellowships

Successful candidates are expected to be experienced researchers of substantial international standing, illustrated by measures of esteem and/or publication record. They normally hold a full professorship or equivalent senior position at their home institution. We welcome applications from visitors with joint research interests with members of the department as well as researchers with complementary expertise.

The duration of the Visiting Fellowship is normally between one and three months, preferably during term time, but never less than one month.

The grant provides a contribution towards travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses. The maximum value of the grant is £9,000.

Applications must consist of the following:

• Short CV of the applicant (max 2 pages),
• List of publications.
• Case for support, including outline and motivation of lecture series or mini-course (max 2 pages),
• Budget, including explicit motivated expression of the requested Fellowship support (with £9,000 max). Where relevant, complementary sources of support should be declared (max 1 page),
• Referees (max 4).

John Nelder FRS (1924-2010) was a British mathematician known for his contributions to experimental design, analysis of variance, computational statistics, and statistical theory. His appointments included Head of the Statistics Section at the National Vegetable Research Station, Wellesbourne from 1951 to 1968 and Head of the Statistics Department at Rothamsted Experimental Station from 1968 to 1984. He held an appointment as Visiting Professor at Imperial College London from 1972 onwards. Nelder was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1976 and received the Royal Statistical Society's Guy Medal in gold in 2005.
