Abstract

To achieve climate change objectives and maintain secure and affordable energy supplies, we need to improve on the technologies that are currently available to us. Recently, there has been an explosion of investment in energy innovation in both the UK and across the globe. This lecture will consider the drivers for this new wave of innovation and how these are shaping energy technology development. The lecture will also assess critically whether R&D investments are coherent with policy goals and whether research portfolios have responded appropriately to uncertainties about global developments, resources and technological breakthroughs.

Biography

Jim Skea is Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).  He has particular research interests in energy, climate change and technological innovation. He has always worked in interdisplinary settings and has previously been Director of the Policy Studies Institute, Director of the Economic and Social Research Council's Global Environmental Change Programme, Professorial Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit, Sussex University and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering and Public Policy, Carnegie-Mellon University. He was appointed Professor of Sustainable Energy at Imperial College London in 2009.
