The meeting, hosted by the government of Tanzania, set the stage for Africa’s leaders to promote investments and policy support to increase agricultural productivity and income growth for African farmers.

During the forum African Heads of State, ministers, private agribusiness firms, financial institutions, farmers, NGOs, civil society organizations and scientists discussed issues such as leadership policy, revolutionising African agricultural finance models, strengthening markets, and transforming African agriculture through innovative partnerships.

Women carrying waterTanzania welcomed guests including Melinda Gates, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair , Dr Kanayo Nwanze, IFAD President, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, Professor Gebisa Ejeta, World Food Prize Laureate, and Jørgen Ole Haslestad, Yara International President & CEO.

The forum focused on unlocking Africa’s agricultural potential by empowering smallholder farmers across the continent. By collaborating with farmer’s organisations, civil society and other partners, the discussion explored new ways to provide resources, overcome challenges and improve yields for the millions of African farmers who are working less than two hectares of land.

Smallholder farmers are at the centre of all we do,’ said Jane Karuku, AGRA President. ‘Our approach is clear and proven – if we provide African farmers the tools they need to grow more and improve their incomes, they will help lead us all into a more prosperous future.’
