Dr Wolfgang Schuster and Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, have been awarded the Michael Richey Medal by the Royal Institute of Navigation for the best paper published in the Journal of Navigation in 2011. The paper entitled “A Novel Integrity Concept for CAT III Precision Approaches and Taxiing: Extended GBAS (E-GBAS)” tackles the scientific and technical challenges to the safe use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) including GPS for the very safety critical precision approach, landing and surface movement, phases of flight. This is an important step in the quest for GNSS-based gate-to-gate aircraft navigation.
