Focus on - Charity & Not For Profit Sector, 19-23 November 2012

A week of events for Imperial students interested in a careers in the non-profit sector

Do you want to save the world? Are you interested in a future career in the environment or international development or in the charity / profit sector? If so, these events are for you!

The Charity Insight week includes events happening most days, culminating in the Charities and Not for Profit Forum (Thursday 22 November, 18.30 – 21:00) – which is a ‘must’ for students genuinely interested in developing a career in this sector.

Charity and Not for Profit Forum 
Thursday 22 November – 18:30 - 21:00

This is a ‘must’ for all students interested in finding out about careers in areas such as environmental campaigning, international development and other charities and NGOs, from a panel of speakers with experience in this sector. 

After listening to the talks, there will be an opportunity for questions and then the chance to talk informally and network with the speakers afterwards.  The following organisations / people will be there: 

  • Action for Blind People - Imperial alumnus (EEE): working in operations in the charity sector
  • Cancer Research UK – Imperial alumnus (MSc Science Communication) working as Health Information and Evaluation Officer  
  • Charityworks – a graduate scheme to get into charity management
  • Department for International Development (DFID) :  ‘roles for graduates in DFID and the new graduate scheme’
  • Friends of the Earth:  ‘career opportunities in environmental campaigning’
  • Voluntary Services Overseas: how VSO can help launch your career in the not for profit sector

‘Tips on getting into a conservation and field research NGO, via Skype’ 15 minute pre-bookable individual appointments
Monday 19 November - 12:30 - 14:00

Thea Powell will be available on Skype to answer any careers related questions, particularly concerning how to develop an ecological career.  Thea studied BSc Zoology, then MRes Ecology, both at Imperial.  After an internship with the British Ecological Society, she landed a job as Communications Manager for The Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project (OuTrop) in Borneo - a conservation and field research based NGO.

How to get an internship in the Charity & Voluntary Sector workshop
Monday 19 November - 13:00 - 14:00

This session is aimed at 1st, 2nd & 3rd year undergraduates who are interested in internships in the Charity & Voluntary sector.

It will cover:

  • How to find
  • Who to approach the hidden job market
  • Pitfalls e.g. when to take unpaid work exp with charities how to decide what’s appropriate and advantages and disadvantages of agreeing to unpaid
  • Lunchtime talks are Tues/Thurs; case studies are Weds so perhaps Mon or Fri lunchtime.
  • Aim at 1/2/3rd years

Lunchtime Careers Talk - 'A Career in Science Policy; the fight for science in governement' 
Tuesday 20 November - 13:00 - 13:50

charity insight weekThis talk will explore a career in science policy, with a focus on the role of medical research charities in policy-making in the UK. It will look at the main science policy issues that have been on the agenda in the last couple of years, and how the science policy community won some key battles. The talk will outline key skills needed for a role in science policy, and some tips for securing a science policy role in a top research organisation.

Lunchtime Careers Talk - 'A Career in the Civil Service Fast Stream'
Thursday 22 November - 13:00 - 13:50

The talk will cover the different career paths available for graduates to pursue in the Civil Service, the advantages of working in the Civil Service, and the speakers experience of the application process.

Restless Development - Charity in residence drop-ins
Friday 23 November, 12:00 - 14:00

Frances Green, Recruitment and Partnerships Coordinator at Restless Development will be ‘Charity in residence’ on Friday 23rd November between 12:00 - 14:00 (15 minute slots available).

You can arrange to speak to Frances about any questions or issues of concern to you, related to developing a career in international development and overseas volunteering.  Restless Development is the youth-led development agency. One of the programmes they run is the UK government’s International Citizen Service (ICS).
