BUCS Rugby Match

Imperial Medicals Rugby 1st league clash with Brunel 1st, IC Men’s Tennis 1st v Kent and ICSM Football Men’s 2nd v Kingston 3rd.

Yesterday was a cold day at Teddington and the dark clouds were looming for the 2.30pm kick off, but luckily the rain held off.  The first fifteen minutes of the match started closely with good pressure coming from both sides and it was gearing up to be a good match, Brunel made the first dangerous move towards the try line but good defence by the Medics saw their effort held up on the line. It was then Medics turn to apply some pressure, after a couple of held up attempts, number 10 Ollie Clark made a good break which lead to Brunel conceding a penalty  offering  Medicals the first points scoring opportunity of the half.  A great penalty kick in front of the posts by full back Oscar Short saw Medics take the lead (3-0).

imperial Medicals Rugby TeamFive minutes later we saw some big tackles coming from both sides but the spell ended with another penalty for the Medics, Short stepped up again and increased the lead to 6-0.  With only a few minutes left of the half Brunel made an advance but some great work by the Medicals defensive players forced a turnover leading to a fast break half the length of the field, however Brunel’s defence recovered well and stopped the try.  After some more pressure saw a turnover resulting in a scrum, the Medicals had the put in and with some great work from the forwards saw Jonny Fisher Black go over the line in the corner for the first try of the day.  A tricky conversion was unfortunately missed leaving the score 11-0 going into half time.

A twist in fortunes in the second half saw Brunel build some threatening momentum leading to two early converted trys 11-14. Despite this pressure the medicals remained resolute and got themselves back into the game with a try from Craig Nightingale, once again converted by Short (18-14).  Although now looking comfortable Medicals conceded a try with only 8 minutes to go after a quick break down the wing by Brunel, a missed conversion meant it was a one point game in Brunel’s favour 18-19.  Once again, the Medics came back fighting  and after heavy pressure in the Brunel 22 earned themselves a penalty in front of the posts to win the game. Expertly taken by Short who had his shooting boots on all day; closing the game out 21-19.

ICSM RFU Club Captain Robbie Ley Greaves remarked, “What a great game, we are very happy to keep up our winning streak at this early stage of the season, I thought Number 7, First Year Scott Godfrey was immense and he is my Man of the Match".

Imperial Tennis playerOver on the Tennis Courts IC Tennis Men’s 1st were taking on Kent 1st, luckily the rain held off and they came away with a comfortable win, losing just one match on their way to a 10-2 victory.

There was also a positive performance by ICSM Football 2nd in the Conference Plate match v Kingston 3rd.  Despite some heavy pressure the Medicals could not force extra time with the team that plays two leagues above them, eventually losing out 2-3.  A special mention for the goal-scorers - Alastair Brown (Captain) and Daffydd Llewelyn.
