Bill Proud led a Town Meeting at the Institute of Physics on 07/11/2012 to discuss a proposed new IOP Group with a working title of ‘Shock Waves and Extreme Conditions’
The agenda was as follows:
1) Welcome and introduction by Philip Diamond, Associate Director, Education and Planning
2) “Bang and Bend: Opening the Door to the Land of Extreme Physics” by Ian Cullis, Qinetiq
3) Presentation of new IOP group proposal, followed by open discussion session, William Proud, Institute of Shock Physics
4) Next steps / Close
Around 55 registered delegates from both academia and industry enjoyed an interesting and lively debate, offering strong support for the creation of the new group. The President of the IOP, Professor Sir Peter Knight FRS also leant his support by attending the meeting. One of the key strengths of the proposed IOP group was considered to be the platform it would provide both for networking with other Groups and airing industry needs. One of the first workshops suggested for the group was to organise was a knowledge transfer event.
