The UK's largest student-led conference on climate change and sustainability takes place at Imperial
After nine months of intense preparation, this weekend the UK’s largest student-led conference on climate change and sustainability takes place at Imperial.
The London Climate Forum 2012 brings leading thinkers and researchers in the field together with students and young people, to discuss climate change from a range of perspectives, taking in science and technology, business and economics and media. Those speaking in the College’s Great Hall include Lord Robert Winston, Imperial’s Professor of Science and Society, along with experts from industry and campaign groups.

"By 2030, people of my generation will be the key decisions makers and we need to make sure that we are making the right ones"
– Caroline Wood
Chemistry undergraduate and Forum organiser
Caroline Wood, an undergraduate from the Department of Chemistry, is one of the student organisers who have been planning the event since February. She said the Forum’s aim is to engage students with climate change issues:
“By 2030 people of my generation will be the key decisions makers and we need to make sure that we are making the right ones, not just for ourselves but for the entire planet. We hope attendees find the Forum useful and enjoyable, and also feel inspired, and better equipped, to make their own contributions to solving some of the environmental challenges we are facing, whether that’s now, or in the future.”
Among the speakers will be representatives from e.quinox, an award winning student project which brings cost-effective and renewable energy to developing countries. Caroline added: “Hopefully by showcasing successful projects, such as e.quinox, more students will be inspired to set up projects that are tackling important climate and sustainability challenges during their studies.”
The Forum has been organised by volunteers from across College together with students from other institutions. They have been supported by the Imperial Hub, the local branch of Student Hubs, a UK-wide initiative which works to support student social action, as well as by the Man Charitable Trust and Barclays. The London Climate Forum programme runs across Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are still available, priced at £10 and £35 for professionals.
