Sustainable Intensification: a new paradigm for feeding the world

The Centre for Environmental Policy weekly lunchtime seminar was given by Professor Sir Gordon Conway on Wednesday 23rd January 2013. 

The title of the talk was “Sustainable Intensification: a new paradigm for feeding the world” 

Synopsis of the presentation:

We are faced by three daunting challenges: repeated food price spikes, nearly a billion people who are chronically hungry and the need to feed a world of growing demands by 2050 in the face of climate change. At the same time we must do more with less – producing more food on the same amount of land, with less water, fertilisers and pesticides and lower emissions of greenhouse gases. This is a tall order. We will need all forms of innovation – using agricultural ecology and modern plant breeding. Access to markets – for seeds and fertilisers – and to sell produce is equally essential. People, especially women farmers, are a key to success, as is political leadership. The talk is illustrated with examples.
