Take part in a unique experiment and blur the lines between science and the arts at an Imperial Fringe event on Thursday in the Main Entrance on Exhibition Road from 17.00-2000. From the physics of singing to the neuroscience of juggling, don’t miss out on the Arts Experiment.

The event will see Imperial’s student societies collaborate with researchers to offer visitors the opportunity to:

  • Meet Nao, the dancing robot. Teach it your best dance moves and find out how Nao springs to life with the Music Technology Society.
  • Hit the dance floor with the Caledonian Society with a traditional Caelidh and explore the curious link with insect behaviour with Diptera Curator from the Natural History Museum, Duncan Sivell.
  • Watch soundwaves in action as the Cahmber Music Society uses sand, metal plates and a bit of homemade vibration with Helga Laszio from the School of Public Health.
  • Try some tricks, and learn about what goes on in the mind of a juggler with neuroscientist Ed Roberts and the Juggling Society.
  • Take a tango with the Dance Society as they team up with Shamim Quadir to look at the precarious role of balance in couples dancing.
  • Robot fashion? Spray-on clothing designer and chemical engineer Manel Torres teams up with the Fashion Society to style Nao, the dancing robot. What will you design?
  • Join neurologist Barry Seemungal and the Dance Company to test your spins and pirouettes, comparing your susceptibility to dizziness with dancers.
  • Learn to tell your viola from your cello as Imperial College String Ensemble use physics to look at some of the science behind strings, bows and musical instruments.
  • Marvel at the musical Reactable, a table that makes music according to what you place on it. Create your own tunes with the Music Technology Society.

Activities are free and open to all. A pay bar will be open throughout the evening.

The Fringe is part of ArtsFest, a week-long celebration of the arts, music and dance – and everything in between. ArtsFest is an annual event organised by Imperial’s student societies.

All week, student societies with a connection to the arts will host a variety of free events on campus. Highlights include the College’s Big Band performing on the Queen’s Tower Balcony, a chance to meet the students from the Photo and Leonardo fine arts society who created this year’s Blyth Gallery exhibition, and dance societies will showcase their best routines followed by a Ceilidh lead by the Caledonian society and String Ensemble.
