Could you be an inspirational secondary maths teacher? Do you want to receive a prestigious £20,000 Scholarship? If so, read on...

The Institute of Mathematics (IMA), working with the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), want to award 150 Scholarships to candidates who will be undertaking a recognised Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course in England during the 2013/14 academic year.

To apply you must:

• Meet the criteria to study and reside in the United Kingdom.

• Have, or expect to achieve, a First or 2.1 degree, Masters or PhD in a subject with a strong mathematical content, or have completed a Maths Subject

• Enhancement Course (SKE) or,

• Have a non-mathematical degree with extensive mathematical professional experience.

• Be committed to teaching in England.

Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships Package

The Department for Education (DfE) already offers bursaries of £20,000 to graduate entrants to ITT training with a First, and £15,000 to those with a 2.1. Any successful Scholars would not be entitled to the DfE’s bursary in addition to the Scholarship. So, what additional benefits does the scheme bring?

• Free/reduced membership of the IMA, LMS, RSS and the Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI).

• Free or discounted journals and newsletters.

• Free/reduced cost attendance at Professional Body conferences and events, and access to resources.

Although there will be a number of opportunities to apply for a Maths Scholarship before July 2013, an early application is recommended.

You do not need to have been offered a place on an ITT course to apply, but as a prospective trainee teacher, you are strongly encouraged to register with the Teaching Agency (TA), which provides a comprehensive programme of support to help you to become a teacher.

The Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships are run in partnership with the TA and, therefore, are only available for eligible ITT programmes in England.
