Silfest 2013: Musical extravaganza rocks Silwood Park Campus

by Rosemary Peters

Over 200 people attended this year's Silfest, Imperial's music festival featuring live bands, DJ sets and games.

Lara Meade and Sara Eckert, postgraduate researchers from the Department of Life Sciences who helped organized Silfest 2013, rehash the day of fun.

“Silfest 2013 went off this year without a hitch. The festivities kicked off in the early afternoon, with eight bands, including Buzzard Orchestral, Fat Phace and Crayon playing throughout the day on a stage set up in the grounds of Silwood Park.

Festival-goers take in the events at Silfest 2013.Like most festivals, there was plenty of food and drink available at Silwood. We even had a liquid nitrogen ice cream on offer, proving that you can take the scientist out of the lab but you can’t take the lab out of the scientist!

As well as live music, other activities included giant-sized board games, a bouncy castle and face painting.

The rain inevitably came, but the festivities were not defeated, and everyone continued to dance and enjoy the final few bands of the day under the shelter of the stage and marquees. Some people even joined the band onstage.

Once it got dark, the crowd moved inside for the after party where DJs kept people dancing until the early hours of the morning. Festival-goers also enjoyed Silfest’s poker and roulette room.

The band Jenny Went Away plays music to a buzzing Silfest crowd. This year’s Silfest was a great success. Everyone had an excellent time, and we rose over £500 in donations for Barbary Macaque Conservation in the Rif, which works to safeguard the future of the Barbary macaque, its habitats, and the livelihoods of the local communities in northern Morocco.

We hope next year will be even bigger and better. Be sure to stop, because Silfest is definitely an event you do not want to miss!”
