Brownlee brothers back in the pool

The Olympic medal-winning Brownlee brothers once again train at Imperial's sports centre Ethos

The Olympic medal-winning Brownlee brothers were at Imperial’s sports centre, Ethos, this morning as they prepared for Sunday’s final of the World Triathlon Series in Hyde Park.

It was a return visit for Alastair, 25, and Jonny, 23, who also used the College’s sports facilities to train for the Olympics, where Alastair took gold and Johnny claimed bronze.

The pair were happy to sign memorabilia, pose for photographs and answer questions following their swim. 

 “To be honest, it’s a little bit strange to be back,” Jonny said. “Last year was very, very special and so it feels weird because it is linked with a ‘once in a lifetime’ thing.  I am enjoying it though!”

The World Triathlon Series began in Stockholm in April, and athletes are awarded points based on how they do at each of the seven races. Alistair currently ranks ahead of his brother Jonny by 55 points, with Javier Gomez of Spain in third place.

As well as being world-class triathletes, the brothers have also made sure they’ve had time for their studies.  “It’s just about good time management,” Alistair explained.

Neil Mosley, Head of Sport, arranged for the triathlon and para-triathlon teams from 33 nations to train at Ethos during the week-long event, which culminates in Sunday’s race. “We felt like we were a little part of their journey last year and it’s great to have them back. I’ve known their coach for a long time so it’s really good to see them.”

Richard Barker, Director of Sports and Leisure for Westminster Council, said, “Westminster hosted a number of events during the Games, including the triathlon. To have them back, and to have them hopefully winning again, is inspirational for community sport.”

As far as predictions for Sunday go, Neil’s hoping the brothers will take the top spots: “It’d be fantastic to see the boys on the podium ahead of Gomez!”
