Professor Brian Cory

Brian John Cory, Emeritus Professor in the Department, died November 12th 2013, aged 85.

Professor Cory was born in Kent on 8th August 1928.  He joined Imperial College as a student in 1948, and continued as a full time academic faculty member until his retirement in 1992, leading pioneering research in digital power system protection, High Voltage Direct Current Transmission and power system economics.

During his academic career, he supervised around 60 PhD graduates, many of whom became international leaders in their field. Following his retirement he remained as Emeritus Professor of Electric Power Systems in college until his death.

Warm tributes have been paid by staff and former students. Professor Bikash Pal said that his own career at Imperial would not have started without Brian's assistance in securing his PhD scholarship from the Commonwealth Commission. "Besides being my mentor during my PhD and beyond, Brian was a great man with exemplary humility."  

Brian loved sailing, and travelling to different countries by sea. He is survived by his wife Molly, two daughters Elaine and Jill, and two granddaughters and two great grandsons. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends and many past students from all over the world.

The funeral will take place at 1pm on Thursday 28th November at All Saints Church, Church Lane, Hartley, Kent.
