Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
Celebrating Black History Month with a joint Imperial As One and Imperial 600 film screening
To celebrate Black History Month, Imperial As One and Imperial 600 hosted a joint event on Tuesday 19 November with a free screening of the film ‘Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin'.
This award-winning film covers the life of the African-American civil rights campaigner Bayard Rustin. Bayard was a dynamic activist, strategist and advisor to Martin Luther King Jr, who dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. He has become the focus of increased interest due to his key role in organising the 1963 March on Washington, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.
After the film Dr Rob Berkeley, Director of the Runnymede Trust, gave a short talk and Q&A about contemporary Britain and countering racism and homophobia.
Over 60 people attended the event, from both inside and outside the College. Andrew Willson, Imperial College Chaplain, has written a short blog post about the evening.
You can read more about the film and see a short trailer online.
If you would be interested in hosting your own screening of the film, please get in touch with the Equality and Diversity Unit.
