The Focus on the Environment week includes events happening most days, culminating in the Science Careers Fair (Thursday 30 January, 17.00 – 19.30 in the Queen's Tower Rooms) – which is highly recommended for students interested in developing a career in this sector.
Skype Appointments with Jim Walker, The Climate Group

Jim Walker is a Co-founder of The Climate Group and serves as the organisation's Director of International Programs & Strategy, based out of the New York office. He is a member of the Executive Management Team and of The Climate Group’s Hong Kong and China boards of directors.
He has worked for 16 years on green strategy and policy, formerly at Environmental Resources Management and URS Corporation in London. He has spoken at events including Climate Week NYC, the Climate Leaders Summit and TED Global and is currently focused on The Climate Group’s electric vehicles, LED lighting and smart technology programmes. He was a co-author of The Climate Group’s review of China’s 12th Five Year Plan commissioned by HSBC and spent 18 months living in Beijing in 2010-2012.

Climate Group - Lunchtime Careers Talk

The Climate Group is an independent, not-for-profit organisation working to inspire leadership for a low carbon future that is ‘smarter, better and more prosperous – for all’. Science Careers Fair

The Science Careers Fair, organised by the Careers Service, is sector specific to help draw the attention of the opportunities available to Imperial students within the science industry.
This event provides the ideal opportunity to find out about Summer Internships, Placements and Graduate schemes. Over 30 employers will be attending the event – see our Science Fair article for a full list of employers.
All year groups of students from the Faculties of Natural Science are encouraged to attend the event from first years to PhDs, but the event is open to all Imperial students and recent Imperial Alumni.
Booking Information: There is no need to pre-register for this event, but will need your Imperial ID card to gain entry. Only current Imperial students or recent Imperial Alumni will be able to enter the fair.
'A Low Carbon Career? A Perspective From Both Sides of the Fence' - Lunchtime Careers Talk

After 20 years with Shell and British Airways, four years ago Darran Messem joined the Carbon Trust. Three very different companies – one producing fossil energy, one using fossil energy, and one reducing reliance on fossil energy – but just how different are they? Between graduating from Cambridge University with a First in Geography to now being the Carbon Trust’s Managing Director of Certification and International Director, Darran’s career has variously required him to defend the sinking of redundant oil-drilling platforms in the Atlantic Ocean, research consumer trade-offs between offsetting airline emissions and increasing bed-length, Chairing a Canadian cellulosic ethanol producer, Directing a Beijing joint-venture investment company, and certifying the greenhouse gas emissions of one of the world’s largest power companies. In his personal perspective on career choices facing Graduates, Darran will give reflect on the different organisations he’s worked for, the pros and cons of the career choices he’s made, and both the delights and challenges of working for an organisation with the mission of accelerating the move to a sustainable low carbon economy.
