The ScottishPower Foundation has announced a new round of scholarships for Imperial postgraduates pursuing energy and environment related studies.

The scholarships, delivered in partnership with the ScottishPower Foundation's Spanish equivalent - Fundacion Iberdrola, aim to develop and educate the next generation of leaders in the energy industry.

Students can choose courses in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable energy systems, environment and biodiversity, clean coal technologies, emissions management, energy efficiency and storage, electric vehicles and smart grids.

Dr Johannes Spinneken, Director of Education at Imperial’s Energy Futures Lab, said:

“We’re delighted that the ScottishPower Foundation is continuing to support Imperial postgraduates in the area of sustainable energy. The future provision of clean, safe and sustainable energy is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and Imperial is committed to collaborating with industry partners to find new ways of addressing this issue.

“Their generosity and foresight in providing these scholarships will ensure that the very brightest students can pursue this crucial field of study in the best possible academic environment. Funding the next generation of sustainable energy practitioners will benefit universities, businesses and wider society.”

Marina Montero CarerroMarina Montero Carerro (pictured left) was awarded a grant in 2010 for an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures. After graduating from Imperial she went on to work at LSE and the European Commission and has recently taken up a PhD place in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, working in an area closely related to her Imperial studies.

“I knew that if I really wanted to make a contribution to the energy world through my work, I had to better understand the links between energy technology, economics and policy.

“My time at Imperial was an amazing experience – the multidisciplinary aspect of the programme and the diverse and international student community at the College made me realize how important it is to think outside the box and consider different perspectives when approaching the complex challenges faced by the energy industry.”

The grants, which form part of a £1.65 million investment in research and education across the UK and Spain, are available at five UK universities – including Imperial.

Scholarship applications for the forthcoming academic year opened on Monday 3 February and close on Thursday 3 April.
