Imperial's postgraduate training received a further boost on Friday, when the UK Chancellor announced further Centres for Doctoral Training.

CDTs aim to bring together diverse areas of expertise to train engineers and scientists with the skills, knowledge and confidence to tackle evolving issues and future challenges. The multi-million pound centres are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and partners from industry and elsewhere.

Following Friday’s announcement by Chancellor George Osborne, two further CDTs will be housed at Imperial in addition to ten announced in November 2013 and January 2014 (see right).

Imperial’s position as the UK’s number one host of CDTs is a mark of the College’s ability to foster excellence in education, research and translation, and reflects the very high quality and impact of our postgraduate offering.

Professor Peter Cawley, from Imperial’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, will lead a CDT in Non-Destructive Evaluation and Dr David McPhail, from the Department of Materials, will lead a CDT in the Advanced Characterisation of Materials.

With 12 new centres overall, Imperial will be home to the largest number of CDTS in the country. The College is also partner in a further six. The UK will have 113 CDTs in total.

George Osborne MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: “A forward looking, modern industrial strategy is part of our long term economic plan to deliver security, jobs and growth to all parts of the UK. Our £500 million investment in Centres for Doctoral training will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, ensuring Britain leads the world in high-tech research and manufacturing.”

Professor James Stirling CBE FRS, Provost of Imperial College London, said: “Government support for CDTs is helping propel the UK to the forefront of research and its application in engineering and science. This will help secure the country’s long-term economic growth while ensuring our society sees value from investment in research.

“Imperial’s position as the UK’s number one host of CDTs is a mark of the College’s ability to foster excellence in education, research and translation, and reflects the very high quality and impact of our postgraduate offering.

“We look forward to using these Centres to create a host of exciting new opportunities for postgraduate students and researchers.”

A feature on Imperial’s CDTs will appear in the next issue of the campus newspaper, Reporter, which is due out on 10 April.
