The 3rd annual CDT Festival of Science took place on Friday 13th June. The theme this year was ‘Science and the Media’, and it saw several impressive speakers present on a diverse range of science related topics.
Talks from Professor Johnjoe Macfadden, Brian Fuchs, Margaret Gold, Dr Lewis Dartnell and Professor Philip Moriarty spanned a range of topics from ‘Does Biology need Quantum Mechanics?’ to ‘Guilty Confessions of a YouTube Physicist’. Several student talks were also presented throughout the day, celebrating the work and achievements of the four CDTs at Imperial College London. Darren Holland, Devin Dunseith and Mercedes Gimeno-Segovia from the Controlled Quantum Dynamics CDT gave an entertaining talk on the successes of the outgoing cohort 1. Each talk throughout the day brought a fresh perspective, either to working in the media or to the interdisciplinary nature of the CDTs and was enjoyed by everyone who attended.
In keeping with the theme of engaging the public as a scientist, a unique and challenging poster competition was set for all the CDT students. Each poster had to explain the student’s PhD project using only the one thousand most used words in the English language- which turned out to be more difficult than first expected. The top prize of £250 was awarded to Naomi Nickerson while a runner up position was claimed by Antony Milne, both from the Controlled Quantum Dynamics CDT.
