Imperial medical students come out top in London competition

Imperial medical students have taken first and second place in a prestigious competition involving medical schools across London.

The University of London Gold Medal Viva, an annual competition organised by the University of London, involves talented students from across the capital who are nominated by their medical schools based on exceptional academic performance.

Amy Mallorie has won the University of London Gold Medal, while  Anthony Dorr took home the Beutel Prize as the runner-up.

Amy and Anthony faced a panel of examiners to compete for the accolades, who tested their on-the-spot knowledge in six key areas: pathology, medicine, surgery, clinical pharmacology & therapeutics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics.

The students follow in the footsteps of Alexander Fleming who won the medal in 1908 when he was a student at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School - one of the schools which merged with the College over twenty years ago.

Winner Amy said: “I took part in the viva with immense pride in having being nominated. I didn't expect to win, but when I did I was surprised and overwhelmed. It is a great way to end my time at Imperial, and I couldn't have done it without the support and dedication of everyone who has been a part of my time here.”

Anthony Dorr said: “I am delighted to have been awarded the Betuel Prize, and it is a great way to conclude studying at Imperial, especially being a part of Imperial's double success with Amy winning the Gold Medal.  I am now looking forward to finally practising medicine after eleven years of being a student.”
