MSc course in Future Power Networks.
Electricity networks all over the world are undergoing a transition on an unprecedented scale. Energy consumption is predicted to grow by 56 per cent in the next 25 years. The importance of the energy agenda worldwide means there's a vital need for power engineers with the advanced knowledge to plan, design and operate a 21st century electricity industry based on clean and low carbon energy sources.
Our new one-year MSc will equip graduates with the skills to work in this field, including advanced modelling and control of new technologies for the sustainable power grid, and mathematical optimisation, design and analysis skills for power network design.
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering leads international research in power system control, power system economics, high voltage dc and power electronics, energy harvesting, model predictive and industrial control.
Course application will open November 2014. The MSc is a one-year full-time taught course, starting October 2015.
World class research
The Control and Power research group is headed by Professor Alessandro Astolfi, who is internationally renowned for his research in non-linear control and optimisation. The MSc course director is Professor Bikash Pal, who has pioneered research in power system stability and control. Professor Tim Green, co-director of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) and EPSRC champion of energy networks HubNet has an international reputation in power electronics application to power distribution and HVDC converter topology and control. Professor Goran Strbac leads the development of novel advanced analysis approaches and methodologies that have been extensively used to inform electricity industry, governments and regulatory bodies about the role and value of emerging technologies and systems for a cost-effective, smart, low-carbon future. Dr Paul Mitcheson has an international reputation in modelling, analysis and demonstration of energy harvesting and wireless power transfer. Dr Balarko Chaudhuri and Dr Adria Juneyent Ferre have research activity in HVDC grid modelling and control.
The group is the home of several UK-China, UK-India and other multinational research consortia leaderships, and has close research links with the power industry including ABB, ALSTOM, National Grid UK and UK Power Networks.
