Prof. Alison Holmes will be speaking at the Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals workshop in New Delhi at the end of November.

Professor Alison Holmes of the Centre for Infection Prevention and Management at Imperial College, London has been announced as part of the internationally renowned faculty running the Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals workshop at the Indian Habitate Centre in New Delihi from 27th to 28th November 2014.

The course aims to provide trainers with the knowledge and skills to effectively deliver educational sessions for healthcare professionals involved in the development, delivery and measurement of antimicrobial stewardship within hospitals – “the training the trainer model”.

Antimicrobial resistance, a global problem, is particularly pressing in developing countries where the infectious disease burden is high and cost constrains the replacement of older antibiotics with newer, more expensive ones. Management of common and lethal bacterial infections has been critically compromised by the appearance and rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic effectiveness is a globally shared resource and a shared responsibility. That responsibility is to maintain antibiotic effectiveness as long as possible, while allowing the maximum possible health benefits to accrue to the world's population.

India has emerged as the world's largest consumer of antibiotics with a 62% increase in popping habits over the last decade. As the world braces for its worst ever threat in the last century - global antibiotic resistance due to unnecessary and unregulated popping of antibiotics, an average Indian has been found to be popping over 11 antibiotic pills a year.

By training more healthcare professionals to educate their colleagues in good antimicrobial stewardship practices the course aims to promote the conservation of effective antimicrobial agents and slow the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Early Bird registration for the workshop is now closed but a special institutional rate is available for a limited time. Click here to book your place now.
