Mentees and Mentors mingle at the Alumni Mentoring Scheme launch event.

Mentor Arithmetic: The new scheme provides a number of benefits for students and their employer mentors.

3 December saw the launch of the new Careers Service Alumni Mentoring Scheme – pairing Imperial students with mentors in the world of work.

Sixty-six lucky Imperial students – from undergraduates to PhD students - have been assigned a professional alumni mentor. Mentors taking part in the scheme come from an array of industry areas, covering:

  • oil & gas
  • banking
  • consultancy
  • technology
  • pharmaceuticals and healthcare

Industry leaders represented include Schlumberger (contributing the largest number of mentors), Barclays, Centrica and Airbus, but alumni from small technology firms and start-ups have also volunteered - including the CEO of CloudMargin, a developer from YPlan and the Director of Infrastructure Engineering at Shazam.

We hope this will be the start of a great scheme that we can expand and build on in the future

– Amy Townsend

Mentoring Scheme Coordinator

Our mentors represent the international community of Imperial; living and working all over the world from Singapore to South America, and the USA to Mauritius.

Mentors will now work with their Imperial student over the next 10 months, meeting face to face or over Skype. Students can expect to gain a greater insight into their mentor’s industry area, how to be successful in the job search and application process and expand their network.

Amy Townsend, one of the mentoring scheme coordinators at the Careers Service said “we are very grateful to all our alumni volunteers for taking part. We have had lots of lovely feedback form our mentors already about how excited they are to be a mentor to our students. We hope this will be the start of a great scheme that we can expand and build on in the future.”
