The recently published REF 2014 results show that the Faculty of Engineering's outstanding performance played a key part in the College's success.
It is especially welcome that all departments across the Faculty have made major contributions to this successful outcome with Engineering appearing in the top three of each of the five UoAs to which we submitted.
Civil Engineering, with the challenge of having only one way to go after RAE 2008, did brilliantly in retaining its position at the top of UoA 14. The departments of Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Earth Science & Engineering submitted jointly to UoA 12 and only missed coming top by the narrowest of margins - to a much smaller submission from Cambridge's Chemical Engineers.
Our UoA 12 submission did come top in the Impact and Environment sub-categories. Computing rated higher than both Oxford and Cambridge to take 3rd position in UoA 11. EEE and Materials put in separate submissions to UoA 13 rating respectively 3rd and 4th , with EEE rated as the top Electrical Engineering department and Materials rating 3rd in materials after Cambridge and Oxford. Notably, EEE achieved a 100% 4* rating for its impact case studies!
Last but very much not least, Bioengineering is now the top Bioengineering Department, rated =3rd (4*) in UoA 15 after large general engineering submissions from Oxford and Cambridge.
These results are clear evidence of the internationally leading quality of research across the faculty and a testament to the hard work that all staff put into preparing our REF submissions. Our strong results in impact signal clearly that we are achieving our mission of doing engineering research that matters.
The REF 2014 result showing that overall we have a larger volume of both 4*and (4*+3*) rated research than all of our competitors including Oxford and Cambridge is a fitting end to a hugely successful year for Engineering at Imperial.
The Faculty would like to thank all staff for their hard work throughout the year - Happy Christmas, and enjoy the break!
