A new article in the Journal of Hospital Infection looks at the impact that organisations have on healthcare associated infections (HCAIs).
Enrique Castro-Sánchez and Alison Holmes’s article assesses the importance of organisational factors on the issue of HCAIs by reviewing aspects that enhance patient safety initiatives surrounding HCAIs and discussing areas for further improvement.
The article highlights the importance of sustaining desired clinical behaviour and the promising potential for new technologies - such as electronic games and involvement in social media – to enhance and support patient safety initiatives.
It maintains that organisational change can help to integrate infection prevention control programmes and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives into a wider and more comprehensive patient safety culture.
