Professor Richard Jardine was announced as the 56th Rankine Lecturer at the Rankine dinner, following the 55th Rankine Lecture, held on 18th March.
The Rankine lecture is considered to be one of the most prestigious lectures in geotechnics. It commemorates WJM Rankine FRSE FRS, a Scottish civil engineer, physicist and mathematician who was one the first in the UK to make significant contributions to the field of geotechnical engineering.
The lecture is organised annually by the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) and is held at Imperial College, alternating every year between an overseas and a UK lecturer. The 55th lecture on 18th March this year was somewhat historic as it was delivered for the first time by a woman. In an overflowing Great Hall Dr Susanne Lacasse, Technical Director at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), presented a very stimulating perspective on the Hazard, risk and reliability in geotechnical practice.
Professor Jardine will join an impressive list of six past Rankine lecturers from academic staff in the Geotechnics Section.
More details regarding the recent Rankine Lecture can be seen on the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) website.
