Statistical Summer Internship Opportunity
Applications are invited for a four week summer internship at the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology located at the St Mary's campus.
Interested in statistics? How about applying your interest in a charitable setting, making a real difference? Well, this summer you could do just this on a four-week internship with The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI), based right here at Imperial!
The charity
SCI works to improve the health and development of the world’s poorest populations by eliminating the poverty sustaining and life-threatening effects of schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and intestinal worms (hookworm, whipworm and roundworm).
SCI is recommended as a top charity on Giving What We Can in the UK and is one of the two international charities recommended by Give Well in the USA, due to SCI’s track record and excellent cost-effectiveness.
The opportunity
- Length: four week summer internship
- Location: Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, St Mary’s campus, Paddington.
The internship is eligible for a bursary from the Charity Insights Scheme at Imperial, and consequently is only open to current students of Imperial who will be returning as a student after the summer break. To be considered for the bursary (£245 per week), the provisional successful applicant must also apply to Charity Insights as per the application procedure on the linked website above.
What wILL I do?
The post holder will work with biostatisticians in SCI to prepare data to be publically available through the Global Atlas of Helminth Infections, enabling public health researchers and officials throughout the world to access data on helminth prevalence in countries where SCI operates. All data analysis will be carried out within R, and the post will be an excellent opportunity to develop programming skills.
Depending on the statistical and programming experience of the post holder, the role can be further extended to testing impact analysis recommendations from the World Health Organisation, and determining how these recommendations can best be applied in ‘real world’ settings. For this latter part, linear mixed models and sample size calculations or simulations will be used. There will also be opportunity to develop an understanding of how SCI operates.
How do I apply?

2) If you are successful in your application for the internship, you will then need to submit a Charity Insights application form to the Careers Service in relation to the bursary, before 15 May 2015.
3) Shortlisted Charity Insights applicants will then be invited to interview and asked to deliver a short presentation on what they would be doing in the four-week project. The Charity Insights bursary will be awarded to students successful in this process.
