Final Department Seminar for 2014 -15 held on 29 April
Professor Tobin Marks delivers the key note talk
On 29th April the final Department Seminar for the 2014 -15 academic year took place.
Circa 80 staff and research students attended the afternoon seminar which included talks from Research Associates Dr Guido Bolognesi: Microfluidic generation and optical manipulation of ultra-low interfacial tension droplets and Dr Hanna Barriga: Engineering swollen bicontinuous cubic phases and cubosomes; a new generation of artificial cells. Junior Research Fellow Dr Joy Farnaby also presented a talk on her research: Applications of synthetic f-element chemistry: molecules and materials.
The seminar concluded with a keynote talk from Professor Tobin Marks (Northwestern University) who among his many and wide-spread recognitions is the recipient of the RSC Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Award 2014 ' for his pioneering work in organometallic chemistry, particularly with regard to catalysis, as well as his work in materials chemistry from molecular sources’.
Interestingly Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson is Professor Marks' scientific grandfather, as his PhD supervisor (Professor F. Albert Cotton) was a former student from the Wilkinson laboratory.
