Imperial's One Big Thing 2015

by Gwyneth Roberts

Imperial's One Big Thing took place on Friday 15 May in Hyde Park. This 5k anyway race attracted just under 200 participants.

On Friday 15th May 2015, Sport Imperial hosted a ‘5k anyway’ event at Hyde Park, London for all Imperial College staff and students.

This was the third year that Sport Imperial have delivered this event, and this year was certainly the best yet!

Imperial’s One Big thing aims to promote physical activity for our local student and staff population. The project aims to address the plateau in physical activity participation rates amongst tertiary students. The event ties in with the new Sport England funded Impetus programme that was launched in October 2014, which is targeting students and staff to be more active through organised activities without the commitment of competitive sport.

Imperial’s One Big Thing ‘5K anyway’ event requires students and staff to cover a 5km distance by either walking, jogging or running. Imperial College has chosen a fancy-dress themed runs starting and finishing at the old park football pitches.

The event was a huge success, building on the numbers reached last year, the race attracted just under 200  participants, ranging from a mixture of Imperial staff and students,  of the total number that took part 145 participants were not currently participating in university sport.

Following the event, the presentation and after party was hosted in Ethos Sports Centre, with all participants and event volunteers and staff invited to attend.

At the presentation, prizes were given out to, the following participants (pictured below):

  • Fastest female – Alex Mundell
  • Fastest male – James Ellis
  • Best dressed – Louisa Young

Additionally on the evening, prizes were awarded to GoFit participants. GoFit also saw record breaking numbers taking part in the challenge.  The college have delivered this 12 week physical movement challenge for the last two years. A total of 44 teams took part totalling an excess of 300 participants.
