A team of Imperial College Business School students has won a competition that tested the skills and knowledge acquired during their MBA programme.
The team of five, consisting of Sandeep Kumar, Henry Quiroz, Mario Abdisa, Pavika Tanveerakasem and Pakaporn Thongyai NA Ayuttaya, beat MBA students from business schools across Europe to win a 5,000 euro prize. The SDA Bocconi International Finance Competition was organised by the Finance Club of the Full-Time MBA at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan.
The competition was split into two phases. The initial phase required each team to produce and present a sustainable business model for a renewable energy business and conduct a full company valuation. The progressing teams then competed in the second phase (final round), where they presented an investor roadshow to raise funding for their proposed business model and its optimal capital structure.
The case study was developed in collaboration with competition sponsors, Bain & Company and Edison & Lazard. The teams then presented their idea to a panel of judges comprising academics from the SDA Bocconi School of Management and representatives from the sponsor organisations.
The Imperial team beat students from ten top business schools including SDA Bocconi, ESADE, HEC, IESE, Rotterdam School of Management, ESMT, IE, LUISS and Manchester Business School.
Commenting on his team’s win, Kumar said: “We are extremely thrilled to win the competition and see our hard work paying off. Our solutions were based on inputs from the team and what we learnt during the MBA programme. We took a bottom-up approach and applied the theory learned in our MBA studies into a practical business proposition. This was a great win for the team and school.”
Professor G. ‘Anand’ Anandalingam, Dean of Imperial College Business School said: “I’m delighted to congratulate the students for their tremendous achievement and for beating some of the best business schools in Europe. Our popular MBA programmes are designed to foster an entrepreneurial approach to the world of business which is reflected in the success of these students.”
