Professor O'Brien has set up numerous spin off companies from his research, including cofounding Nanoco, and has juggled being an active researcher with raising funds and creating intellectual property for these companies and editing over eight books. He remains a scientific advisor to Nanoco and is Professor of Inorganic Materials at the University of Manchester. His diverse experience made him the ideal inaugurial speaker in this series.
