Students and staff celebrate the successful first week of the new MEng in Design Engineering.

Winner of most extravagant design

On Friday, the first student cohort of the new MEng in Design Engineering course presented their first group projects.

Students were asked to design and construct a hat to carry fruit, using only newspaper, string and duct tape.

Students worked together to come up with creative and innovative designs with the limited materials available, and tested their creations in workshop catwalk, weighing in the fruit remaining at the end.

Surprise volleys of Nerf gun darts from the staff and unstable hats, dislodged fruit along the way. Prizes were given to the team with the hat which crossed the finish line with the most fruit and for the most extravagant design.

The winning team for capacity, with just over 21kg of fruit consisted of Suwen Ge, Yeon Kim, Will Pepera, Tilly Supple, and Norbert Wesely, using a woven newspaper basket design.
