Andrea Greco reports on Cohort 4's trip to the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.
Just a few days before the end of second term, Cohort 4 had the unique opportunity to visit the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), the UK's national laboratory for fusion research.
Students were offered a guided tour to the facilities of JET (Joint European Torus), the world’s largest magnetic fusion experiment, while being taught about the challenging problems related to materials’ design and optimisation which will play a key role in the future steps of research in fusion energy.
The visit to Culham highlighted the important scientific challenges related to the development of fusion reactors, reinforcing the role of theory and simulation of materials in providing invaluable insight into these problems.
