The Centre for Doctoral Training on Theory and Simulation of Materials (TSM-CDT) and Materials Design, Inc. (MDI) announce a partnership.

The Centre for Doctoral Training on Theory and Simulation of Materials (TSM-CDT) and Materials Design, Inc. (MDI) are pleased to announce a substantial and wide-ranging partnership involving the following elements of joint cooperation, amounting to a commitment of over £100k p.a. by MDI:

Provision of MedeA® software: MDI will provide copies of the MedeA® software suite to all TSM-CDT students to be used in training and research, including the core MSc course on ‘Methods for Simulating Materials’ and the optional MSc  ‘Group Programming Project’.

Summer Internships: MDI is currently hosting a TSM-CDT student at its office in Angel Fire, New Mexico under the direction of Dr. Paul Saxe. Future summer internships at MDI facilities in Angel Fire, San Diego, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm and Vienna are envisaged.

Scholarships: MDI is funding one EU scholarship for a student starting in the fifth cohort of the TSM-CDT in October 2013. MDI further intends to offer at least one scholarship for the next five cohorts starting from October 2014.

Academic Prizes: MDI will continue to fund two prizes: the MDI Graduate Research Prize (awarded 9 months into the PhD) and the MDI Advanced Graduate Research Prize (awarded 18 months into the PhD).

Contribution to the Delivery of the CDT: MDI personnel will continue to visit the TSM-CDT throughout the academic year to deliver master classes and seminars and to contribute to taught courses and the career planning course.

Advisory Board: The CEO and President of MDI, Dr Erich Wimmer, has joined the International Advisory Board of the TSM-CDT that meets annually to review and advise the management team of the TSM-CDT.

About the TSM-CDT and MDI:

The mission of the Centre for Doctoral Training on Theory & Simulation of Materials (TSM-CDT) at Imperial College London is to create a generation of scientists and engineers with the theoretical and computational abilities to model properties and processes within materials across a range of length and/or time scales.  It has been funded by a £6.4M grant from the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to train 50 students in five cohorts. The TSM-CDT is currently bidding for EPSRC funding for a further five cohorts, the first of which would start in October 2014.

The mission of Materials Design, Inc. (MDI) is to provide the best materials simulation technology to academic and industrial R&D entities throughout the world.  In addition to its ‘toolmaker’ role as the developer of the MedeA® software suite, MDI provides its customers with expertise and helps to hone their respective skill sets vis-à-vis materials design.  MDI works in partnership with leading academic institutions worldwide including Universität Wien, Sandia National Laboratories (a U. S. Department of Energy research and development national laboratory) and the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) in France. Students in the TSM-CDT are potential employees and customers of MDI.
