Dr Saif Al Ghafri from the Department of Chemical Engineering has been awarded the prestigious Best Dissertation of the Year Award at the 2015 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC).

The award is in recognition of Dr Al Ghafri’s outstanding PhD thesis on “Phase Behaviour and Physical Properties of Reservoir Fluids Under Addition of Carbon Dioxide”, a topic which is fundamental to the design and operation of CO2-storage projects using deep saline aquifers or depleted oil fields. This research was performed as part of the Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre (QCCSRC), jointly funded by Qatar Petroleum, Shell and Qatar Science and Technology Park.

Dr Al Ghafri’s PhD research has led to several highly-cited articles in leading academic research journals. Since graduating with his PhD at the end of 2013, Dr Al Ghafri has been working as a Research Associate with the QCCSRC.

PhD supervisor Professor Martin Trusler comments “Saif was an exceptional PhD student with remarkable ability in both experimental and modelling work. He is a truly worthy recipient of the ADIPEC Award”.

After a rigorous selection process led by the Awards Chairman, Mr Abdul Munim Saif Al Kindy, Chief Executive Officer, ADCO, with the support of the esteemed members of the Regional Select Jury, the award was presented at the ADIPEC Awards Gala dinner at the Emirates Palace on 9 November.
