by Ms Helen Johnson

Applications are invited for six 4-year MRes/PhD studentships at the National Heart and Lung Institute.

Applications are invited for six 4-year MRes/PhD studentships at the National Heart and Lung Institute, funded by the National Heart and Lung Institute Foundation (Charity 1048073) to start in October 2016. The studentships will be funded for 4 years, on a bursary of £17,500 per annum and tuition fees at the Home/EU rate.  There is no provision for overseas student fees.

The NHLI Foundation’s interest is in all aspects of heart, lung and cardiovascular disease and projects offered involve a variety of disciplines including bioengineering, cell biology, chemistry, epidemiology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, pharmacology, physics, physiology and public health.

NHLI Foundation research studentships enable graduates with excellent honours degrees to undertake a three to four year training programme that includes a research project plus training in research methods and transferable key skills.

Students would be expected to register for the MRes in Biomedical Research, Respiratory and Cardiovascular Science stream (yr 1) in the first instance.  Successful completion of the MRes degree with Merit is followed by PhD studies (yrs 2-4), on the NHLI Foundation research project of their choice.  Applicants with a relevant Masters degree may be exempt from year one of the programme.

NHLI and Imperial College London provide excellent opportunities for postgraduate research student training including research seminars, journal clubs and an exciting collaborative environment.  All students will belong to the Graduate School which provides a comprehensive Transferable Skills Programme and has received the Times Higher Award for Outstanding Support for Early Careers Researchers in 2006 and 2008.

How to Apply:

Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree or UK equivalent in an appropriate subject from a recognised academic institution.  To apply please send a CV with your grades clearly listed, a one page personal statement, and the names and addresses of at least two academic referees to NHLI’s PGR Office nhlipgr.team@imperial.ac.uk.

Application closing date is 31st January 2016.  Please note that candidates must fulfil College admissions criteria.
