Imperial students took to the streets of London last week for their annual 'Circle Line' fundraiser, making over £6,000 for a local hospital.
Hundreds of students from all years of Imperial’s MBBS and Biomedical Science programmes participated in street collecting, volunteering with the elderly, musical performances in hospitals and railway stations, and volunteering in homeless shelters.
The day was filled with charitable deeds and raised well over £6,000. This year the money will be given to the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney, which provides rehabilitation and long-term care for people affected by brain injury. The hospital is not far from Imperial’s Charing Cross campus, home to its School of Medicine.
Imperial’s medical students’ union, ICSMSU, maintained its decade-long tradition of using places along London Underground’s Circle Line for volunteering opportunities—of which there was an abundance! The students then all celebrated their charitable achievements in the evening, with everyone who volunteered their time gaining free entry to the club.
The event was organised by ICSMSU’s Raising and Giving (RAG) committee. The Circle Line day came at the end of RAG week where sponsored head-shaves raised an additional £4,000 and a joint charity auction with staff of the Faculty of Medicine raised another £1,000.
“Circle Line is an annual event that has been at the heart of the medical school for over a decade,” said RAG chairman Sammy Sundar. “It feeds the life and soul of our School of Medicine RAG, allows us to continue to raise tremendous amounts of money for a truly worthy cause, and contributes to what makes the medical school so special.”
ICSMSU president Maredudd Harris added: “Circle Line is a day where everyone in the School of Medicine that wants to take part can make a real impact in the local community, and celebrate a massive amount of hard work!
“Congratulations are due to Sammy Sundar, RAG chairman, and the whole committee for organising such an excellent week of activities.”
