Making discoveries isn't the only way to use your Science degree. Your expertise can communicate and develop policy that could change the world.

As an Imperial student, you’re studying at the very forefront of the science and technology that shapes the way we live; communicating those ideas to the public and using them to inform policy is as much a specialist task as research. Working in museums and cultural heritage or perhaps writing for a scientific journal, or even directly within government changing the way the country works are just a few ways science communication can become a rewarding career.   Starting on Monday 21 January 2019, we’re running a dedicated week-long programme of events tailor-made to introduce you to a career in science communications and policy. Whether you’re interested in the area already, or not sure how your degree might be relevant, there’s an event for you to get your questions answered. With first-class speakers from around the world, this week is your chance to find out more about science careers, minus the labcoat.

Monday 21 January

12:30 - 13:30 CAREERS CAFÉ – with the Civil Service Fast Stream This Career Café will be facilitated by the Civil Service. It will be an informal, student led discussion around communicating contemporary science to a public audience. The session will cover all aspects of the process to include: The What, Why, When and How…

16:00 - 17:00 Internships in Science Communication With Rhiannon Penny & Norma McEnery, Placement & Internship Advisers, Imperial Career. Looking to gain work experience in Science Communication? This seminar will provide an overview of the key industries and give an insight into the various opportunities available, exploring the factors affecting the sector and we will highlight the key qualities employers are looking for. 

Tuesday 22 January

13:00 - 14:00 LUNCHTIME TALK - A Future in Science Communication: your questions answered – Prof Stephen Webster, Senior Lecturer in Imperial’s Science Communication Unit will discuss the best ways to get involved in science communication, including the route offered by Imperial’s MSc Science Communication

15:00 - 16:00  CAREERS CAFÉ – with Simon Shears, Media Manager Wellcome Trust. Simon works as a media manager for Wellcome, a foundation dedicated to improving human health. Alongside a team of media managers and officers he tells the stories behind medical research by working with national and international journalists.

12:30 - 13:30 Communicating Contemporary Science to a Public Audience This Career Café will be facilitated by the Contemporary Science team from the Science Museum.
