Imperial College claimed victory against the Medics this weekend, as this year's Varsity tournament came to a close.
The annual competition pits sports teams from Imperial College against their rivals from Imperial College School of Medicine Union in a bid to be crowned Varsity Champion.
Across an action-packed day of sport at Imperial’s Heston Sports Ground, Imperial and Medic teams competed across six different sports before Imperial were finally crowned this year’s winner.
The final match, Men’s Football, saw Imperial beat their Medic opponents 2-1 in a tightly fought contest and was a fitting ending to the day’s sporting events before Imperial raised the Varsity Cup.
Other highlights included ICSM dominating performances in Netball where they won 4 of the 5 fixtures and Imperial’s Men’s Rugby sides claiming a clean sweep of victories across all three games. Prizes were awarded throughout the day by senior staff from the College, including President Alice Gast and Provost James Stirling.
The day began at 10am with fixtures taking place throughout the day. The competition was also given a fun festival feel with inflatable games, food and drink as well as big screen areas and face painting for families in attendance.
The results from VarsityFest were added to the points already gained in the hockey and water polo fixtures which had already taksixen place earlier this month and saw Imperial enter the final day with a 5-1 point advantage
Lucinda Sandon-Allum, Imperial College Union President, said: “Varsity is always the most anticipated sporting event of the Imperial calendar and this year’s competition didn’t disappoint. It was fantastic to see the energy, talent and dedication from students from both sides. Congratulations to everyone who took part!”
