18th March visit to FlexEnable and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL)
On 18th March, our esteemed visitors from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea, and Dr Steph Pendlebury (CPE Programme Manager), Dr Minwon Suh (postdoc, Ji-Seon Kim group) and Mr Jinhyun Kim (PhD student, James Durrant group) visited FlexEnable and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The visitors from GIST included Professor Seung Hyeon Moon, President of GIST (in the middle of the group picture), as well as Prof Do-Kyeong Ko (Chancellor of GIST College), Prof Byoung Hun Lee (Dean of International and Public Affairs), Prof Kwang-hee Lee (GIST-ICL R&D Centre Director), Prof Ji-Woong Park, Prof Myung-Han Yoon, Prof Suk-Won Hong, Dr Heejoo Kim, Dr Hongkyu Kang, Dr Sooncheol Kwon, Mrs. SooJung Park (Member of International Co-operation in GIST), and a reporter from the Korean newspaper Dong-A.
FlexEnable is an innovative company in the area of plastic electronics pursuing flexible displays and sensors. They have been successful developing key technology in industry-compatible manufacturing platform for low-temperature organic thin-film transistors. Dr Paul Cain, Strategy Director of FlexEnable, warmly welcomed and introduced their recent activities as well as up-to-date demonstration items, such as conformable wearable organic liquid crystal displays (OLCDs), flexible X-ray detectors, and fingerprint sensors. The tour was a great opportunity for GIST and FlexEnable in that these pioneers from academia and industry could interact and discuss the latest advances and challenges in plastic electronics.
At National Physical Laboratory, Dr Kamal Hossain gave an excellent overview of NPL’s history and remit. Dr Fernando Castro and Dr Sebastian Wood (a Plastic Electronics CDT alumnus) provided a fascinating tour of the labs and facilities.
Many thanks to Jess Wade for organising the trip, and to FlexEnable and NPL for hosting us!
