Being an Imperial College student is not only about studying, but also about taking part in the countless societies and extra-curricular activities offered. Old Centralians' Trust - the charitable arm of the City & Guilds College Association - aims to recognise and support all those students who make exceptional efforts in such extra activities. After receiving the self-nominations by the students, the Trust negotiates with the Senior Tutors and the Heads of Departments to select the very best nominees. They choose two candidates from each of the ten Departments of the Faculty of Engineering for their annual Student Activity Awards.

On behalf of the Department of Chemical Engineering, we would like to congratulate to our two winners: Vatsal Shah and Justin Yong!

Vatsal ShahVatsal has just finished his third year at Imperial, and without doubt all three years must have been quite hectic for him. He has been the year representative for three consecutive years, as well as the founder and the secretary of the Jain Society (a religious cultural society). He is also interested in playing keyboard, singing, playing table tennis and cricket. Moreover, he is associated with the Jain Education and Empowerment Trust (collecting donations to fund economically weak students) and he is a member of the Alpha Leo Club (carrying out a number of different volunteer activities).

Justin YongJustin has also just finished his third year, taking part in exponentially growing number of activities in each year. In his first year he took part in the Malaysian Society, the Industrial Relations Sub-committee and the Enactus Imperial. In his second year he was a Project Coordinator in School Plus, in addition to being a Project Secretary in an Enactus Imperial project and he was awarded the Imperial Plus Volunteer Accreditation. This year he was the Vice President of Enactus Imperial and the Vice Chair of Industrial Relations of the Chemical Engineering Society.

It is wonderful to see how our students manage to balance their studies with outstanding extra-curricular interests and also, the great variety of the different causes our students are involved with. Congratulations again to both our winners!
