CMBI researchers collaborate with Imperial Colleagues to fight infection
Congratulations to Dr Andy Edwards and Dr Avinash Shenoy, collaborators in the "Promoting Immune Clearance" EMBRACE award.
Host immune cells attempt to kill bacterial pathogens by exposing them to reactive oxygen species (ROS) via a process known as the oxidative burst. However, this is often insufficient to kill the pathogen, leading to infection and the need for antibiotic therapy. Previous work in the Edwards lab identified how bacteria survive the oxidative burst, providing a novel target for a new type of therapeutic that promotes killing of bacteria by the immune system.
An award of £15K from the EPSRC-supported EMBRACE programme will be used to develop this work by bringing together a group of Imperial investigators with diverse skillsets to design and develop new drugs that prevent pathogens from surviving the oxidative burst.
