Professor Robert Winston brings science to hit US chat show

by Jon Narcross

Imperial's Professor Robert Winston exploded onto American TV this week making an appearance on CBS's The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Professor Winston, Professor of Science and Society, performed three gas-based experiments on the Emmy nominated US talk show.

Before a live studio audience Professor Winston, assisted by host James Corden, demonstrated the flammable properties of hydrogen by setting fire to soap bubbles before using a hydrogen peroxide and soap solution to create oxygen, sending an eruption of foam 15 foot into the air.

The final experiment saw Winston and Corden use liquid nitrogen to fire 4000 ping pong balls across his Los Angeles studio.

In his role at Imperial as Professor of Science and Society, Professor Winston set up the Wohl Reach Out Lab championing outreach activities to raise the aspirations and scientific literacy of young people aged 6–18.
