Engagement and Simulation Science Centre wins President's Medal

Congratulations to the Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science for winning the 2016 President's Medal for Excellence in Societal Engagement.

The Imperial College Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science (ICCESS) won the 2016 President’s Medal for Excellence in Societal Engagement at the award ceremony last week. The ICCESS was established in early 2015 within the Department of Surgery and Cancer. Located at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the Centre is led by Professor Roger Kneebone and Dr Fernando Bello, who between them have over fifteen years of experience in the field of medical simulation.

Through combining clinical practice and simulation technology with rigorous scholarship, the aim of the Centre is to develop a new science where the perspectives of clinicians, bio scientists, patients and publics come together to address challenges which affect us all. The focus on combining advanced yet portable simulation with haptic technology provides unique opportunities to recreate environments of education and care. 

Collaboration is central to the work of the Centre, with three key areas of focus:

• Clinical Collaboration: Using simulation to model key areas of patient care and clinical practice
• Bioscience collaboration: Working with groups across Imperial College to help new scientific discoveries make the transition into clinical practice with the involvement of patients and publics
• Non-medical collaboration: Working with experts in performance, craft, the arts and major Albertopolis institutions to gain new insights into clinical practice

By developing work through collaboration within and beyond Imperial College its aim is to make engagement and simulation science a central component of translational research.
