SCI Open Evening 2016

by Mrs Alexandra Grainger, Demran Ali

SCI hosted 2016 Open Evening on 21 September. If you were unable to attend you can watch all the presentations and download the slides.

The SCI hosted its 2016 annual Open Evening on 21 September at Imperial College’s South Kensington Campus, and was delighted that so many of their supporters and those interested in hearing about what they do – over a hundred in total – attended the event.

The theme of the evening was one of growing importance for the SCI, and the wider Neglected Tropical Diseases community, ‘How to reach the unreached’ – the populations that are some of the most adversely affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTD), but are often so difficult to gain access to and provide treatment for. A range of speakers, from the SCI programme managers to its finance team, delivered presentations, providing insight from their respective disciplines on this topic and described the work the SCI is doing in this area. This year’s event was extra special as Professor Alan Fenwick, SCI’s Founder and Director, shared with the audience news of his pending retirement at the end of the year. He formally presented his successor, SCI’s CEO of many years Dr Wendy Harrison. Several moving speeches were given on the night celebrating Prof Fenwick’s commitment to combatting neglected tropical diseases, particularly schistosomiasis.  Long-term collaborator in the fight against NTDs, Prof Peter Hotez recorded a special surprise message which was aired and can be viewed here.

YouTube placeholderDr Lorenzo Savioli (former Director of NTDs at the WHO), applauded Prof Fenwick’s incredible determination and inconceivable achievements during his career, spanning over 40 years. No doubt more celebrations and speeches will follow during the coming months.

If you were unable to attend this year’s open evening the booklet given to attendees, which contains the evenings agenda along with other information can be downloaded here.
