Highly acclaimed cardiologist Barbara Casadei to deliver the second NHLI Athena SWAN Lecture in January 2017.
The NHLI Athena SWAN Lecture Series was launched in January 2016 and showcases high profile female scientists and their careers. The event is part of NHLI’s Athena SWAN Action Plan and aims to increase the visibility of female role models to inspire and encourage female researchers in the early stages of their careers. The first talk of the series 'Highlights of a career in stem cell research' - delivered by Professor Fiona Watt – was a big success that attracted a large audience from NHLI, as well as from elsewhere in the College and externally. We hope to build on this success with our second lecture of the series 'Fortune Sides with Her Who Dares', by Professor Barbara Casadei, on Tuesday 31st of January (registration for the event is now open).
Professor Casadei studied medicine in Italy, after which she moved to Oxford to undertake her clinical and research training. She was awarded the Joan and Richard Doll Fellowship at Green College in 1991, a DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine in 1995, and a BHF Senior Research Fellowship in 2001.
Barbara hopes to inspire the next generation of female scientists by encouraging women in the progression of their scientific careers. The talk will look at her research and how her career has expanded, leading to her current posts as a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, Deputy Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and Fellow of Wolfson College.
