Staff from the Centre for Transport Studies have been announced as one of the winners of the Low Emission Freight and Logistics trial competition.
The consortium included Dr Marc Stettler, Professor Washington Ochieng and Dr Panagiotis Angeloudis from the Centre for Transport Studies, along with Howdens Joinery Group, Sainsbury's Supermarkets and Alternatech.
The £2.2 million project, with funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and Innovate UK, includes an 18-month operational trial of a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) for 20 heavy goods vehicles operating in cities in the UK, including London.
Freight accounts for about 30% of road transport CO2 emissions and the technology has the potential to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions resulting from stop/start driving on congested roads.
