The winners of this year's Materials Design Research prizes are announced.

The winners of this year’s Materials Design Research prizes are:

Materials Design Graduate Research Prize (this year, two prizes were awarded because of the exceptional strength of the applicant field)

Gleb Siroki 

Gleb is awarded the prize for his impressive work on light-matter interactions in topological nanoparticles. His quantum-mechanical calculations have led to new insights that could pave the way for applications of topological nanoparticles in nanophotonics and already resulted in one publication in Nature Communications.

Chris Ablitt

Chris receives the prize for his innovative work on negative thermal expansion in layered oxides and other classes of materials. He used atomistic simulations as well as symmetry considerations to clarify the origin of this phenomenon. His work already led to one publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. 

Materials Design Advanced Graduate Research Prize:

Mitesh Patel

Mitesh receives this prize for his outstanding work on delayed hydride cracking. He used both analytical and numerical approaches to understand the effects of hydrogen in zirconium nuclear fuel cladding. His work already had significant impact in both academia and industry.
