Professor Alice Gast was elected a Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute at a ceremony this week.

The City and Guilds of London Institute is a Royal Chartered Institute which exists to enable people and organisations to develop their skills for personal and economic growth.

The Fellowship is its highest honour, awarded to role models who have demonstrated excellence in their field.  Over 1000 Fellowships have been awarded to date since the late nineteenth century

Imperial has long-standing connections with the Institute. City & Guilds College was one of Imperial’s constituent colleges - merging with the Royal School of Mines and Royal College of Science to form the Imperial College London in 1907. 

The City & Guilds Building, overlooking Exhibition Road, was built in the early 1960s and stands on the site of the former City & Guilds College building. It still houses the College’s original 19th century bell and clock mechanism.

To this day, Imperial’s engineers still call their student body the City & Guilds Union.

Professor Alice Gast said: “It is truly an honour to become a Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute. We share a belief in the transformative power of education for both our students and society. I look forward to continuing to work with the Institute to advance that cause.”

Professor Gast was one of several high-profile figures to receive the honour at the event this week, which also included Imperial alumnus and designer Nick Munro.
